Wedding Music

I'm trying to put the finishing touches on the music for my sister's wedding in 2 weeks.

In an attempt to broaden the selection base, I decided to ask my new roommate if I could borrow the 5 CDs that she used for her wedding 2 years ago. She said sure, and I brought them into work.

OH. MY. GOSH.

This music sucks SO badly. Honestly, sitting here listening to this crap makes me feel like I am sitting in the waiting room of my dentist. It's even giving me that quasi nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Why do people feel like since its a wedding we should use every single cliché, sappy, "romantic" song ever created.

And why, for everything that is good on this earth, do people think that the Simpson/Lachey combo is perfect for an important event like this? In the 3 discs I've listened to there have been 3 from Jessica and 2 from 98 degrees. SICK.

Plus there is WAY too much Celine Dion in this world to bring her into your special wedding day.

There is so much good music in this world my mind just reels to think of why someone would ever choose this over-emotional garbage?

  1. I went to a wedding over the weekend and a half decent singer belted out "I knew I loved you before I met you." Now that is bad. Is this ceremony or reception music you are needing?

  2. Reception background music. It's a backyard BBQ wedding reception so I'm trying to keep it fun.

My sister in law handed me a spreadsheet with all country music in three different categories, ceremony, slow and fast. The later two were for the reception.

I feel fortunate. Our wedding music was all from Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks except 2 pieces. One was an instrumental of a sogn that meant a lot to us and the other was trumpet voluntaire. The rest was just instrumental irish music at the reception. We learned our sappy wedding music lesson - don't do it.

  4. Wait a minute, did I miss something here? Your new roommate is married?

  5. Happy wedding music? Hmmm...my first thought is "I Love You" by Martina McBride. My favorite wedding song is "Your Everything" by Keith Urban, but it's slower and more...tender. One of my Dallas roommate's brother got married in February & she made the reception CD...and included such songs as "Accidentally in Love" by Counting Crowes and (the marvelous) "Blue Clear Sky" by George Strait...so I suggest those too. Hope these help a bit. ~~

  6. I love Mr. Strait, and the groom does too, so that will be on there for sure.

Juddmensch- my new roommate was married 2 years ago and divorced 6 months ago. Pretty sad story.

  8. I am SO GLAD I gave you this project instead of someone else that would be peppering me with questions. It is great to know that my music wont suck and that I don't have to worry about it.

  9. Matt and I are including a No Doubt song in the mix...nothing too sappy, I'm not really into that.

  10. I know you're looking for not sappy suggestions, but if I can throw one sappy song out there... "When You Say Nothing At All" (there are lots of good versions... I'd reccomment the one by Alison Krauss)... I LOVE that song and plan to dance to it 10 times at my wedding. :)
For a more random suggestion, I also love "Celebrate" by the Dave Matthews Band.

  11. courtneyk - I already added that one. I don't think it is bad because there is no keyboard or synthesizer in it. As long as the music sounds like actual instruments I'm adding it.

  12. Hi Katie,

Last summer my roommate got married and I made a CD that people seemed to enjoy. 'Course, you know what mood you're going for, though. I did classic stuff like "At Last" by Etta James, and other songs by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Norah Jones, Michael Buble, Nat King Cole, etc. If you want I can email/post the playlist. Good luck!

  13. nemesis..that's exactly the stuff I've put on! The hard part for me is that the groom LOVES country and I don't really have that much in my collection.

  14. Oh . . . yeah, can't help you there. I remember the "Hope Floats" and "Runaway Bride" soundtrack having some good stuff, though.

Listen to kaycee! baby got back is what it's ALL about!

Seriously, the DJ played some serious crap at our wedding... although I didn't really notice it at the time, I was too preoccupied with my new husband. Some incredibly thoughtful guests complained to me later how much better my wedding would have been if the music during the cocktail hour and dinner didn't suck so bad. Thanks people.

So, I don't know if it's too late for my input, but I'll give it a try anyway. For the record, I hate all the songs/types of music that you mentioned in your post. I've been in charge of music at a few friends weddings, so here goes:

    Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight
Dave Matthews Band - Space Between
The Calling - Wherever You Will Go
    Extreme - More Than Words
    The Beatles - I Will
Billy Joel - Just The Way You Are
Frank Sinatra - I've Got You Under My Skin (Try the one with Bono from U2, it's good.)
    The Beatles - Something
James Taylor - Fire And Rain
Amie Mann & Michael Penn - Two Of Us (Beatles Cover from I Am Sam)
    Faith Hill - Breath
Tim McGraw - It's Your Love
    Garth Brooks - The Dance
    Lonestar - Amazed

I realize some of these are sappy, but they work pretty well for receptions.

In addition, here are the songs Heather and I will have in our wedding slideshow. They would probably work as well:
    Dishwalla - Home
    Lifehouse - You And Me
    Gavin DeGraw - Dreams
    Ben Harper - Forever
    No Doubt - Running
Rob Thomas - Ever The Same
    Ben Folds - The Luckiest
None of these are really sappy.

Hey you probably wont read this before the wedding, but I think you should put in "when I’m 64" by the Beatles and "in my life" they are really good songs.
